Origins
LearnEX, a family owned, New Zealand based business began in 2001 when a former teacher and homeschooling mum of two had a burden to help raise the standard of education for NZ children.
"I was sick and tired of all the time wasted in school and the low educational standards and I wanted to make a difference", says Erena Fussell, managing director of the company. Erena believes that most children can achieve way above what is expected of them and, given the opportunity and support, will thrive once they are taught HOW to learn. She became interested in and began researching the concept of Classical education or, in her words, "the education our parents and grandparents would have had." There has been a recent resurgence in Classical Education, particularly among homeschoolers who often tend to achieve way above their peers academically.
Education with Classical Roots
Although Classical Education takes various forms, the main principles are the same, namely:
- A recognition of three main stages of learning - grammar, dialectic and rhetoric
- A strong emphasis on languages, starting with Latin and progressing to modern languages
- Training students 'how' to learn through training the memory and concentration early and developing skills of enquiry later in more formal education
- Starting with a very broad and rich education and narrowing this down more and more to an area of specialty
Since those days of just a handful of products and a two page catalog, "I" has become "we" as we now have a small team of dedicated workers, all committed to the same principles on which the company was founded. Our product range has broadened considerably and we have developed systems for ordering, warehousing and distribution which enable us to remain efficient. Despite these 'behind the scenes' changes, the overarching aim of the business existing to help raise the standard of NZ education remains the same.

- require minimal preparation on the part of the parent or teacher

- do not require the parent or teacher to be an expert in the field before they teach the subject

Meet the Team
Managing Director
Erena Fussell
Erena is a former teacher who has been homeschooling her two children since 2001. Erena is responsible for the management of the business, marketing and most of the Customer Services. Her interests are books, early literacy, natural therapies, and singing, playing & arranging music.
Director:
Alistair
Structural engineer by day and company director by night, Alistair has major role in the decision making of the company as well as a hands on capacity during the various Resource Days and display/conferences/shows we attend. He enjoys socialising, fishing and playing & watching sport for recreation.
Customer Services:
Denise
Denise is a former teacher and homeschooling mum. She helps out with conferences and Resource Days.
Pam
Pam holds display stock for us in Christchurch. She is available to offer advise and you are welcome to visit her home to view stock at a mutually convenient time.
Office assistant
Emma Fussell
Chief telephone answerer, it is more than likely you will get 14 year old Emma when you phone through with a query or an order. She also processes orders and helps with various administrative tasks; my right hand helper!.
Educational Consultant:
Duncan
A retired school principal of over 40 years, Duncan has a wealth of educational knowledge. He is a trained ESOL teacher and has a strong interest in music. He runs his own tutoring business in Hastings.
