Around the World in 180 Days by was written by a homeschooling mum in the USA but is published by Apologia educational ministries (as in the science people) because they were so impressed with it.
Students use the notebook approach to find out information about the world, continent by continent. (Incidentally, the notebook approach is just a fancy name for where information is collated and stored in a notebook or folder.) Anything relevant to the topic may be included such as photographs, newspaper clippings, letters, articles, web printouts etc. 'Around the World in 180 Days' is designed as a year long study but as much or little time as you like may be devoted to it. Each continent is researched within the context of its geography, history, culture and current events.
This comes as a two volume set - one book with the questions AND answers and the other with just the questions. With some parental organisation, this resource can be used as the basis for a whole-family study but we suggest it works best when used as independent research for a gifted or older child. Another option is to use it as a 'dip-into' resource where a break is taken from the regular course of study.
Level: Designed for ages 6+, we suggest it is ideally suited to secondary level as a research project, a very motivated younger child or a whole family to do together. This is because of the reasonable level of research skills required.
Suitability: Although published by a Chrisitan publisher, this book is suitable for all. Suitable for an older homeschooler to do independent research, as the basis for a teacher prepared unit study within a school context (Y6 upwards), homework for a Y6 class or for a homeschool family where the parent is prepared to do some background research.
Also available: Additional workbooks also available if required.
