Welcome to Spring and all our new subscribers. We have had a busy term tripping all over the country during the winter.
I wanted to share with you a few things we have learnt about rabbits recently...
1) Rabbits are cute and innocent looking. 2) Rabbits have very sharp teeth. 3) Rabbits can chew through a DVD AND video cable in two minutes flat.
It's our birthday! It's hard to believe that on the 1st of July, it had been three years since LearnEx began :-) so thank you for your support us over that time. It means a lot. (awwww.)
And the winner of the $50 Open Day voucher is... Congratulations to Juliet (and yes, she has already spent it, in case you're wondering.) Fiona T won our runner up prize draw.
We will not be having an open day as such during the first week of the holidays but will be having a vendor stand at the upcoming conference so you are welcome to come and see us there.

For those of you with a Classical education bent, we are carrying the Memoria Press line of products including Latin, Logic and Rhetoric. We are very impressed with their thorough yet not-too-dry approach to teaching these subjects. They also do not require the parent/teacher to have a background in the subject. Click here to request a free copy of the magazine 'The Classical Educator', a top quality Classical magazine published by Memoria Press. As well as an outline of the products available, it also has some excellent articles on Classical Education. More to follow on Memoria Press in a future issue.
The Learnables We have finally decided on 'The Learnables' www.learnables.com as our foreign language programme of choice because it teaches using a 'communicative' approach which is based on the latest linguistic research. Encouraging thinking in the target language by deliberately avoiding direct translations, it also uses exclusively native speakers to introduce words and phrases. In this way, the new language is more natural and correctly pronounced. We have started with stocks of French but this is available in book or CD format in a number of languages including French, Spanish, German and Hebrew to name but a few. Although the publisher suggests age 8, we have found the first level as suitable for ages 5+ because there is no reading involved at the first level.
[I will be speaking with Duncan Lennox about teaching a second language at the upcoming Manukau Homeschooler's conference - see details further on in this newsletter.]
Information brochure on The Learnables is available on request or click here.
Holiday order processing We will not be processing orders on the 26th or 27th of September as we are attending a conference but will be back on board on the 28th. Number Sense Just one tiny mistake and the whole thing is wrong! No wonder many children (not to mention quite a few adults) just give up on maths altogether. Here are nine ideas to help make sense of maths >>> Read rest of the article
Math-U-See The most exciting news of the year is that Steve Demme, founder of the award winning Math-U-See programme is coming downunder! Math-U-See continues to be an oustandingly popular programme both with homeschooling and non homeschooling families alike. In particular, it seems to be working well for visual/spatial learners, those with learning problems and gifted children whom traditional programmes often don't suit. |
Maths, Molecules and Motivation Manukau Homeschool Support Group has taken the opportunity to organise a conference on the 8th of October while Steve is here. (There are also meetings in the South Island and in Australia.) The conference will be a full day programme including three Keynote addresses and 18 different seminars so if you are home educating, this date is well worth putting in your diary. (Do it NOW while you remember.) $5 Earlybird discount expires on 3 October. I will be also attending the Christchurch conference during the day on Friday the 7th so may see some of you at either of those meetings..
If you are a non homeschooling parent or a teacher, Steve's Keynote address in the evening entitled "Approaching Maths with Mind and Hands" will revolutionise the way you think about maths. www.learnex.co.nz/conference has more information inlcuding time, date, venue, topics covered as well as an online booking form. You can also download a hard copy brochure by clicking here (PDF format.)
For those of you who use MUS, there is a worldwide Yahoo discussion group for users: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mus-users/
Something you non MUS users might be interested in is their free online math drill page - http://www.mathusee.com/drillsheet.html
