Title : Money lessons from Christmas

Date : 2005-12-12

Financial lessons for children from Christmas...

Eight lessons you can teach your children about money at Christmas time

1. Budgeting. Set a limit per person and stick to it. By buying things on sale, you can save the extra money or make each person's gift stretch a little further. If it helps, keep a note of the savings made.

2. Saving.  A little money can be set aside each week so Christmas doesn't become such a financial burden. Most supermarkets have Christmas Club which give you up to 5% off if you buy vouchers during the year. A graph is a good way of showing how the total is mounting up over the year.

3. Avoiding impulse buying. Make a list ahead of time and stick to it! How many of us have gone Christmas shopping and ended up buying something for ourselves!!!

4. Avoid advertising. This one is obviously easier said than done but once you have decided on what to buy for each person (and this can be done before you go shopping), stop flicking through the junk mail. What do you think the purpose of mailers is? If possible, also teach your children how to throw them away without looking. (A great lesson in self control!) This can be very difficult but it is worth it unless you want to be nagged to death for all the latest widgets.

5. Throw out Santa's wish list. Allowing children to have a list of things they want not only breeds dissatisfaction and lack of contentment but also disappointment if they don't get what they want. Contentment is never learnt through having our desires fulfilled.

6. It is better to give than to receive. A biblical principle that holds true even today. Getting joy out of others' joy is a rare   character trait these days.

7. A little self sacrifice goes a long way. It doesn't hurt to offer a gift that involves a little time or effort on our part.

8. Think of others. Help your children make some small gifts they can offer to neighbours, friends, the mail delivery person etc. Many community agencies also collect books/toys etc. for the less fortunate. Help them pick out a toy or book to donate. Help them too to be cheerful in their giving and not resentful.

Christmas is a great opportunity to teach about self sacrifice at a time when everyone else is being self indulgent. The true spirit of Christmas is about worship and giving so let's not forget that in all the rampant commercialism.

Have a wonderful and blessed Christmas.
